SOMEWHERE IN KENTUCKY // LS FEST

WHAT A WEEKEND.

Friday night Me and my buddy Darren set out for Bowling Green Kentucky. I'm not too sure what that is...but that was the location of this years LS FEST.

Now, typically I wouldn't even go near a large gathering of nothing but Chevy LS motors. I've never been a huge fan of the "muscle" car scene. They're loud as shit, and typically the enthusiasts are not my favorite people. However, WRECKED magazine was out there and holding a drift competition with nothing but LS powered drift cars. Now...this I could get into especially because a local fella from St. Louis was out there in his LS powered E36. There were a few LS powered 240's also...which is sorta cool I guess, haha!

Soooo LS Fest opened Friday morning, but we took off Friday evening in hopes of arriving late Friday night and catching the excitement first thing Saturday morning. Welllll, that didn't exactly happen. Somewhere in Kentucky we ended up catching a little bit of car trouble and had to catch a night in a podunk motel somewhere around midnight or 1AM. The next day was spent getting things in order and wandering a tiny town where you pay for your gas AFTER you pump it. There was also a drive thru liquor store, and one market where a kid dressed in all black and has earrings is clearly not a normal visitor.

Eventually we were on the way to Bowling Green where we would spend the next day and a half running around capturing as much media as we could trying to make up for a little bit of time lost. The drifting was probably the best part of this whole shabang, especially because the homie Steve Topping absolutely crushed and made a Formula D driver look a little silly all while running some pretty undesirable tires. Steve caught second place in comp which is super dope. Congrats Steve, I love you <3

I am a little disappointed because going into the whole trip I was expecting to see a few mullets or something of the sort, and I ended up only catching ONE MULLET. Better luck next year I guess....

Anyyyway! I didn't shoot hardly any stills over the weekend except when we were stuck in that random Kentucky town. Stay tuned for a sick ass subject media video though!

GODZILLA IN THE STUDIO

Last week at work we had a Nissan GTR in for testing and such. I was a little nervous to put my hands on a car that cost the same as a decent sized house. But nonetheless I dug right in and wanted to get everything done with a couple of days to spare in order to have a whole day shooting this beast.

When the time came to finally shoot the GTR, I wanted to do something different than what I have been doing with every other car in the studio, which is a 3/4 angle in the corner of the studio, dark overall composition, glowing brake light, etc etc. I did do that shot first, but then I wanted to try a straight on shot, and maybe try a couple of shots of the interior. I struggled a little bit getting images that were 100% perfect, and realized that its now time for me to upgrade my light wand to something with a stronger beam, and maybe something with a diffusion possibility.

Overall, I had a pretty good time messing around with a couple of different angles with this car, I hope that I can take it o location in the next few days to try to get something different, and something more dynamic.

Anyway! Here's a couple of the images from that set, I haven't finished all of them yet. As always, Comments and suggestions are always accepted!

CREEPIN // ST. LOUIS

A couple days ago I went and met my buddy Mike over at Rebekah's house, it was dope. He introduced me to a couple St. Louis urban explorers, one of which I've been wanting to meet for awhile now. We sat around, drank some beer then hit the streets looking for a place to lurk around and shoot some photos.

We eventually rolled up on an old High School thats been rundown for a few years now, I had no idea what to expect but I was definitely stoked as shit. I'd never gone into  one of these buildings without paint before either, that was weird, haha

After a few minutes of trying to figure out how to get in, we boosted one person up a little roof and he went around and let us in a side entrance. We busted out our flashlights and started wandering. Starting in one of the Gyms and roaming through old classrooms, the cafeteria, the roof, and a couple balconies. It was crazy to see all of the remains that were left behind. It seemed like the school shut down and left a large part of belongings behind.

After awhile of exploring, we were in the middle of shooting a few photos when a fella with a wrench and headlamp walked up on us and asked us what we were doing. Naturally we were all startled at first, but the fella seemed to be alright and showed us around the place. Then he tried to lead us back to a different part of the school where one of the guys saw a few shadows down the hall, we were a little sketched out and decided to go the other way haha! We snapped a few more shots off and got the hell outta there!

here's a few frames i popped off in there, shooting at 6400 ISO I'm pretty pleased with how these came out. Most were shot in almost complete darkness with a speed light. Been on a bit of a black and white kick lately too, haha

HANDS UP // DONT SHOOT

On the way home from work I saw a street sign for Florissant Ave. I got off the highway and turned left. Eventually I found myself standing on the corner of the Quik Trip that was looted and burned to the ground causing a streak of events that find themselves on front pages across the country. I got out there pretty early, so there wasn't much of a crowd...yet.

I stood on the very ground as several others who raided, looted, and rioted for the death of Mike Brown. Now, I've been doing my best to remain a neutral party in this whole shindig, the reason being that every time I hear a fact or a piece of evidence, two days later something comes out that shatters all of the reasoning and logic for the previous statement. What I do know is this: A boy by the name of Mike Brown was gunned down by a St. Louis County Police Officer. Since his death an outraged community has banded together to riot, loot, burn a gas station down, and make national headlines. there are several pieces of information that fall in-between, but I'm not going to even get into it. Im sure you've all seen the articles radiating Facebook like its a contagious cough.

I did not go to the streets of Ferguson to join hands with the protestors, nor did I go there to scold them. I simply went for the proof. I have a tough time living in a world where the media becomes our view of real life, and I wanted to see the streets, the people, and the Quik Trip for myself. I walked the street and witnessed peaceful protestors, free bbq, and angry protestors. I stood on the very corner of a boarded up shop that I saw being looted and raided on the internet. I stepped on broken glass form a brick of anger that came from the hands of a greedy individual. I heard angry protestors scold me for being white, and out of place. As I walked the block, it started to sink in. I'm terrified of this place. I'm terrified of the people who act in such anger and are willing to destroy communities. I'm terrified of the Militarized police officers waiting down the street for outbreak so that they can come relinquish force upon citizens. I'm terrified of the national attention that this city is getting. I'm even more terrified to know that my house is 8 miles down the street from where all of this has been happening.

But at the same time I have a lot of love and appreciation for people who are able to act upon a feeling in which they feel so strongly about, its just very sad to me that people wasted their passion and feeling on their own community, and destroyed their neighborhood.

It was hard to photograph out there, as I was soaking it all in, but here's a few frames I got.

cheers.

SHOOT A BAND GET PUNCHED IN THE FACE

Last night I found myself at fubar shooting my buddy Seth's band again. Naturally I was way hyped to be there shooting live bands especially because thats something I'm not too familiar with. I showed up around 7 and immediately started shooting right way. Seth's band didn't go on for a few minutes so I warmed up with the first band, getting exposures right etc etc.

After a quick set Wings of the morning swarmed the stage and right away a crowed was formed (they had the largest crowd out of anyone at the show) These guys blow me away with the fact that they have only played 2 shows (this one being their second) The sound of these guys is incredible. I'm a bit of a music snob but if you asked me I would say that they stole the show...again. I'm not sure if its just me but I think that they dominated the night, and performed beautifully. Somewhere during the set I found myself in the small mosh pit that formed and before I knew it I got whacked in my left eye. Not too sure of what just happened I walked to the outside to collect my thoughts, haha. I was caught totally off guard by the fella throwing hands like it was his job. I looked around for a second, blinked several times, then jumped on stage to grab a few more frames before their set was completed. It was hard for me to watch these guys through a lens because I was enjoying their sound too much. I fuckin' love these guys, and it helps that they are all incredibly nice dudes and a real joy to be around.

After their set was through, me and my buddy Mike stuck around for a little but to shoot the rest of the bands. Everyone sounded good, and although it was a bit of a challenge shooting in there, I think we made out alright if some good frames. I can't wait to be shooting more live bands, something about the extreme amount of energy in such a small space is amazing to me. I love it!!

1997 MAZDA MIATA

Alright! Well, the past couple have been extremely busy and extremely dead at the same time. Last weekend was the Ice Cream Cruise, and I shot a wedding, but images from neither are done yet...We traveled 4 states in 3 days and barely managed to grab 10 hours of sleep....I spent the whole last week recovering, haha.

Anyway! I showed up to work with quite a surprise a couple days ago, a 1997 Mazda Miata was in for LED testing, and this thing was perfect. I had a hard time believing it was even a 1997. The interior was perfect, the engine bay was perfect, there were a few nicks here and there....but the car is 16 years old, what do you expect?

After getting all the testing done, I had a little time to mess around with this beauty, so I did a little light painting. I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out, Light painting is still very new to me and I've been trying a few different things here and there to improve. I couldn't believe it when I got all the shots I need first try....everything seemed to work out! I guess Mondays are not allllways bad! haha!

Well anyway! I'll post images from the wedding and the Ice cream cruise as soon as they're done, but for now..I'm gonna go grab a beer.

2014 BRZ

Last night a few STL86 Members got together and we all hungout in the studio. Laura brought her brand new WRB BRZ and I couldn't keep my eyes off of this thing the whole night. We all hungout threw down a couple beers, kicked tires and talked 86's for most of the night. I talked Laura into sticking around for a few extra minutes so I could throw some light on her pretty BRZ. I got the shots I wanted pretty quickly (thank god) and was able to make a pretty nice looking composite. That color is so vibrant even in person, it's perfect. I'm still trying to get better and better at composite images, I still have quite a bit to learn, but I am pretty pleased with the way this BRZ turned out. I also figured out how to screen record to heres the whole process along with the image!

Things have been moving a little slower lately, haven't been shooting nearly as much as I'd like, but there are a couple of shoots in the works, and with a wedding and a few events around the corner taking some time off isn't so bad. I was able to mess around a little bit and shoot Ryan's Wrangler in the studio today! Messed around with some more light painting and shot this tethered to my computer which was also pretty cool. Hopefully things will pick back up in the next few weeks! oh! also there was a giant praying mantis on one of the computers in the warehouse today that scared the shit out of one of the shipping guys, haha! stay tuned people!

JERSEY // SHORE BRAHHH

//THIS POST IS LONG DEAL WITH IT <3

As I woke up friday morning, I realized that it was 6:00am. My flight for New York was set to leave at 6:30AM. shit.

Thankfully when I called my mother to reveal the terrible news, she had informed me that my flight was delayed about 40 minutes. I hung up the phone, threw myself together and flew out the front door. I hope I locked it. (as i'm sitting on the plane writing this)

I  (literally) threw everything in the truck and darted to the airport. Luckily enough I did not hit a SINGLE red light, and there was no traffic. The airport is also right off the highway and I was able to grab a parking spot literally 30 feet from security where I waited about 5 minutes to get through. As I grabbed all of my belongings and bolted for the gate I noticed it was empty. I ran up on 2 ladies and asked if i had made it "Boyyyy you betta be Travis Carroll!" "I sure am!" I said as I am trying to catch my breath. "Boyyyyyyyy I been calling youuu! Get on dat plane!" She was shocked when I told her I came from the city in such a short amount of time. As I grabbed my boarding pass she asked me "Where is it that you gotta be that someone was looking out for you to make this plane?" I informed her I needed to meet my nephew, and ran down the hall to the plane.

Now, I've only been to the beach 2 times in my life (that I can remember) And I had no idea that I was going to the beach where Jersey Shore took place AND my moms beach house happened to be about 100 steps from the show house. That being said you can imagine what type of people flooded the beach and boardwalk. Yeah....

Shortly after we pulled into the house and I said all of my hellos, my brother and his family showed up. I finally met my nephew Sean Thomas. He was perfect. I'm not generally a fan of babies or any children for that matter but all of my opinions about little children went right out the window when I saw this dudes face. I couldn't take my eyes off of him long enough to get any photographs of him! THATS HOW PERFECT HE WAS.

For the next couple of days I would walk the boardwalk, people watch, take pictures of random interesting humans, hear a bunch of crazy stories from said interesting humans, ride wave runners (get thrown off) drink more than I should have, eat a shitload of pizza, stay up too late, go to the actual sand on the beach once and have a great fucking time doing it.

I can't wait until I can make it back to the beach. As for Jersey shore.........who am I kidding i'll probably go again.

ALEX IS IN TOWN // SETH PLAYS IN A BAND // CARS AND FREE TACO BELL

WHAT A WEEKEND.

My suuper good buddy Alex from Kansas City showed up at my house on friday with his new Motorcycle. Needless to say I was extremely hyped, and was even more hyped when I saw the beast he was traveling on. Alex is in the progress of taking a multi state journey on his new motor bike. I couldn't be more hyped for my dude (as long as he makes it back in time because we have a wedding to shoot) because I know Alex and his capabilities and I'm very certain that he will document the trip perfectly, so I gave him a Gopro to make sure he gets EVERYTHING. We spent a little time in the studio talking about the journey, shooting some photos, and making an intro video. I'm fucking hyped. Stay tuned for updates on Alex's trip!

My buddy from work Seth plays in a band. A fucking good one. I had no idea. Seth asked me probably 2 months ago if I would come to pops and shoot his band, naturally I said yes.

We rolled out east to pops. I had never been there and didn't really know what to expect. I had also never heard Seth's band before, so again I didn't know what to expect. After catching a couple of looks at the interesting characters in the parking lot we gathered right away that this was a metal show. Thank god the air conditioning was on full blast.  Me and Alex sat around a little bit while we waited for Seth's band to come on, it was worth the wait. (ok so we only waited for one band, but still) they murdered it. I was in awe and couldn't stop smiling as they drew a crowd and performed flawlessly. I had never shot a band before, So i'm not really even sure that any of my images are good. But I still had a blast.

After we stuck around a little bit, we headed down the street to Columbia Illinois where Firestone was putting on a meet and greet car show. My buddy Nick was out there representing Diode Dynamics and a few other friends were out there hanging out. I was pretty exhausted so I didn't shoot nearly as many photos as I should have, but still had a good time and got some free Taco Bell out of the deal so I can't complain!

2 5am nights, way too much alcohol, not enough sleep, a car show, a metal show, and an empty wallet later here's some images for you.

FIRST RIG SHOT // NICKS MUSTANG

A couple of days ago a fellow photog in the area came through to go shoot my buddy Nicks mustang. Jeff happened to have a camera rig and I was pretty hyped on this because I've never done any rig shots before. We were originally going to a tunnel not too far from the studio but Jeff suggested we checkout a parking garage down the street that was mostly white in color and was loaded with LED lights. Of course we were hyped on that and set out right away!

We pulled in and got the rig hooked up to Nicks car and started firing away. We tried a few different styles but I was the most excited about one shot in particular where there was a purple wall in the background. I loved the way the bright purple stood out in the mostly white background, and really contrasted nicely with nicks black car. We goofed around for a little more until I finally wore Jeff out enough to go home around 11pm. Nick wasn't so lucky...I wanted to get a few more shots of the mustang. of course I told nick "It'll only be a few more minutes dude, come on!" welllll that actually meant another hour and by the time it was all said and done nick was basically falling asleep. haha! We eventually wrapped around 12:15 :D

PAUL // KIRSTEN MCCAIN

Saturday finally rolled around, I woke up a little later than I wanted and had to throw myself together pretty quickly in order to make it out to St Louis Motorsport for a little exotic edition of cars and coffee before having to get ready for Paul and Kirstin's wedding. Me and my buddy Nick spent a little time walking around a room filled with cars that cost enough money to end world hunger. Not bringing my camera to this was a pretty bad idea, but I can't complain because I did get a pretty awesome muffin out of the deal.

Anyway, after cars and coffee I jetted back home and threw myself together so I could look halfway decent for the wedding. Time was not on my side, and neither was my gas tank. I rushed to make it to the church and my nerves were going 600 miles an hour as I was not only cutting it close with time, my gas gauge was literally below the empty bar. Somehow I made it to the church with a few minutes to spare and did not run out of gas. Thank God. The ceremony was beautiful and I couldn't help but break out into a giant smile as I witnessed Paul and Kirsten come together in holy matrimony. They looked incredible. Now this I did bring my camera to but about 32 seconds before I entered the church I was notified that there was no photography allowed. Bummer.

After the ceremony we had quite a bit of time to make it to the reception hall. Me and a few of my buddies grabbed a little something to eat then headed back to Nicks to kill some more time where we had a gift wrapping party and lounged around a little bit. The time eventually came to hit the reception which happened to be at that really awesome place off of I-70 W as you cross over the river with the really nice windows...you knowww that really cool spot that you always want to go to when you drive by? Thats the one! Thats where the reception was, and it was super awesome. What made the whole deal better is that they were serving Boulevard Wheat on tap! As you can imagine I threw down a few of those and wandered around taking pictures all night. It was awesome. I wish I could have got more images, but I had to remember to be polite to the hired photographer and not step on her feet........the large amounts of boulevard wheat might be another reason I didn't get as many shots as I would have liked....hahah Here's a few of the snaps I grabbed!

2010 GMC SIERRA // LIGHT PAINTING ATTEMPT 2

After spending a couple of crazy days scrambling to get Brandon's 2010 GMC Sierra fully tested for LEDs I had a little bit of down time and wanted to practice my light painting skillz.

Before I killed the lights and busted out the magic wand, I popped a few shots with just the ambient Warehouse lights, I love these lights especially because they're daylight balanced and really give a nice industrial warehouse style look especially when they hit the raw brick wall and the concrete floor. I turned the light bar on for this shot because with the warehouse fully lit it wouldn't totally blow out the right side of the frame....its still insanely bright and I'm pretty sure my eyes are strained from staring at that thing for the 15 minutes I was shooting haha

After I got something I could work with I killed the lights and started throwing some light on this beast. This truck is gigantic! I spent about 30 minutes trying to get the body line highlights but I couldn't get far enough away from the truck and the light trails kept bleeding in. I finally got the house on wheels moved over a few feet and was getting everything handled until I realized I wasn't 9 ft tall and couldn't hit the highlights on the windows correctly. Andrew had been walking through the studio and suggested the idea of hopping on a ladder to get the right angle. So he hopped up there and I directed him on where to shine the light in order to get the correct highlights. He was stretched out pretty far and was pretty close to falling off the ladder, but we got the shot we needed! woo!!

As it came time to get the brake light popped, I hit the self timer, ran to the truck and hopped inside, the shutter was open by this point and I couldn't get the brakes to come on, so I had to dig around in the dark to find the key so I could get the brakes going. Once I turned the key it made the headlights come on and that was not originally what I was going for. I headed back to the camera expecting to have to do another take but was pleasantly surprised when the brake lights and headlights looked perfect. I felt like a kid in a candy store. I love when shit like that happens. I'd say a large part of my successes in photography have been the result of those little happy accidents. I left the light bar off in this shot mainly because I wanted to try and get a shot of this truck without the bar so people could see how low pro it sat against the windshield. I also didn't want too much attention on the light bar itself, I like the idea of it being a subtle addition to the roof of the truck in this shot. OKAY. Anyways here's a couple of the shots I pulled today!

HEATHER // CALEB

The other day I got a call from an old friend I used to work with in Kansas City. She was telling me that her and her fiancé were in need of some engagement photos! Of course I was super down for this especially because I haven't had the opportunity to shoot people lately. We met up at Forest Park and caught up a little bit before we sprung into action. I had never been to Forest Park before so this was an awesome experience for me especially to experience all of the great landscape that it had to offer. We met up around 530 or so and just went from there. I had nothing planned for the rest of the evening and I definitely needed a little more practice shooting people. I was so lucky to be able to shoot these two because not only do they photograph incredibly well, they are two of the most easy going people I have ever met. There was no awkwardness with these two and I really enjoyed every minute of shooting them, especially because it was very evident to me that they were head over heels in love with each other. That always makes these types of things much easier, and a lot more enjoyable!

After we wrapped up this power couple threw out the idea of going and grabbing some dinner. I was more than happy to join them as we threw down some of the best vietnamese food I had ever eaten in my life....ok so it was the only time I had ever had vietnamese food but still! it was SO good! Definitely a perfect way to end the evening. anyway, here's a couple shots of these two in action. enjoy!

1969 CHEVELLE // LED

After hearing some pretty dope news about one of my shots being featured, I walk into the studio and see this blue beast staring back at me. Brandon walks by and tells me this is their 1969 Chevelle that they had done a full LED/HID Conversion with. I was pretty hyped to hear that and while everyone was walking by snapping photos with their phones I was trying to figure out how I was going to make a pretty dope image with this beast.

I had never done any light painting before, and I have definitely spent quite a bit of time checking out people like Travis Young, and Jacob Brcic who have clearly mastered the light painting technique. I wanted to create something similar to their two styles that I highly look up to.

We just moved in over here so the studio space is pretty bare at the moment, which actually worked out in my favor. I grabbed our spare set of wheels, our rolling toolbox, and a palette to try and cover some of the exposed panels we have on that wall. I didn't want all of the panels exposed, but just enough so it didn't look like overkill. Overall I wanted it to look like a little working garage space. The garage door helped a lot, haha.

We backed the car in to position and I started getting things set in camera. I didn't have a work light so i tried to do a shot with just my iPhone. That shot probably would have worked, but I ran to Lowes and grabbed a bigger LED light so I could fill more space with some light painting.

My favorite part of shooting this whole thing is explaining to everyone what I'm doing as I'm doing it. All of the warehouse guys came over to watch and so did a few of the Sales guys. I love this shit.

Again, this is my first time doing any sort of automotive light painting, so don't be too harsh on the criticisms haha I'll figure it out more and more as I go along. But I'm definitely looking very forward to doing more shit like this in the future!

SCOOBAPALOOZA

Saturday morning rolled around rather quickly and that meant one thing. Scoobapalooza. Whats Scoobapalooza you ask? Picture every Subaru that you see on a daily basis in one central location. I've always been a raging fan of Subarus especially the Forester Wagon. I arrived a little after 10 or so and found the fellas from Diode Dynamics where I'd be hanging out most of the day. The lot filled up quickly and there were Subarus as far as the eye could see. There were an abundance of STI's (of course) and such but what really caught my eye and was hands down my favorite Subaru at the show was a 1992 Loyale Wagon. this thing was incredible. The guy who owned it was pretty rad as well. Originally he had bought it for his son and ended up giving his son the Volvo and kept this beauty for himself. It was definitely refreshing to see such a unique car in a sea of STI clones.

Turn In Concepts had a pretty impressive setup as well. Not only did they bring their monster of a race car. They had a pretty impressive display of a motor which was cut open so you could see the piston strokes, and a rear quarter with suspension installed, as well as a few of their various mounting products. I was very impressed with the extent of this display and not to mention the team there was extremely nice and very knowledgeable being able to answer all of my questions with some pretty thorough answers. Hats off to Turn In Concepts! Check them out at turninconcepts.com

There was also Autocross at this event which was pretty cool as well. I'd never really sat and watch autocross before but I can honestly say I almost fell asleep watching the same 10 or so cars rip through some cones. The best part of the autocross was hearing the sounds of those beasts, oh and the couple of people who spun out a few times, haha.

All in all Scoobapalooza wasn't half bad! It was pretty hot out and of course I thought it was a great idea to wear all black (shocker) but aside from the heat it was awesome to be out and hangout with my friends for a little bit, and have some good conversations with some car owners. Definitely enjoying these busy weekends and am looking very forward to more!

cheeerzzz!
